As i don't live in the usa i'v always wondered why the usa insist on large engines ? just seems a waste of fuel to me.
I drive a 2012 plate astra 1.6 sri (with the full package) in general it does 45 mpg but if driven right (following the dash controls) it bangs 55 to 60 mpg but yet the spec for it says avg 33 pmg.

Yea it can suck some gas but I always go easy on the peddle. And crusing on the interstate it kicks down to 4 cylendars giving you around 28 mpg. It's not all that bad foe me... but still not good.
