A new webhost

Postby JakeTFG » 07 Aug 2006, 21:44

I need a good fairly priced webhost as Globat hosting is just horrible.

Anyone have any suggestions for a large forum? (http://www.thefirstgeneration.com)

I got my server from http://www.servermatrix.com and have been happy. I've been leasing it for nearly two years and have experienced zero down time other than what resulted from my own screwups. :-)

Their prices are higher now than what I got.

What you need to decide is how much server do you need (cpu and RAM are the two biggest hardware concerns) and how much bandwidth you need (obviously) and how much hand-holding you need as far as managing the configuration. Some companies will be more active as far as managing the server, but you pay for it.

By standards your forum isnt very large, i would recommend a cheap shared hosting account until the posts hit around 100k.

Number of posts is only one measure of how big / active a board is. If you have a lot of concurrent users then you can end up needing a bigger box, even if the total number of posts is not that large.

This is all BS. There is no such thing as "unlimited" space or transfer. Read the fine print. :-)

If the host truly thinks they can offer this, believe me, they won't be around long.

You should read this article (by dojo): How to tell if a host is dodgy

Well I have to say that I have been using the above posted host for almost a year. It has never gone down that I am aware of. I've never had a problem with bandwidth, and I have several GB of data uploaded.

The only negatives I've seen are:

They don't allow a single file upload to be more than 50 MB.
They don't allow .RAR extension compressed files (.zip are ok)
They don't allow porn sites
They don't allow 'download central' type sites (i.e sites that exist solely for file downloading)

All of these I can live with. (I've even used RAR files many times before I found out about the restriction with no negative action taken against me)

Their support has been phenominal, always got back to me within 24 hours.
They have all of the latest files, versions, and extensions.

So I don't believe that article about 'how to tell if a host is dodgy'. It may apply in some cases, but in this one they have performed beyond all my expectations. And the hosting plan that I use is normally over $200.00 per year, but they do special promotions on E-Bay that you can get the same plan for $9.95.

Here is their terms of service:
http://www.centricahosting.com/terms_of_service.html

If anyone can find something negative let me know.

P.S. And the final selling point: one of the software services they provide:

phpBB - phpBB is a high powered, fully scalable, and highly customisable open-source bulletin board package. phpBB has a user-friendly interface, simple and straightforward administration panel, and helpful FAQ. Please note that this feature will use one of your MySQL databases.

This is how I discovered phpbb in the first place. It will actually set up and configure it for you. (Although when I installed it they were using version 2018, but they may have upgraded since then)

23.1 Web hosting accounts include a certain amount of data transfer, if you exceed this amount in any one month your account will be deactivated until you have upgraded to an account that has more data transfer included.

Doesn't say unlimited to me. In fact none of the hosting plans listed on that site are unlimited anything.
23.2 Web hosting accounts that are prohibited from hosting file distribution websites, adult content orientated websites, hosting banners, graphics or cgi scripts for other websites, storing pages, files or data as a repository for other websites, reselling or giving away web space under a domain, sub domain or directory.

This is not unusual for "unlimited" sites. They don't want you to simply load up a bunch of stuff for people to download without having an actual site around it.
Should your account use more than 5% of the servers processing power and as a result have a detrimental effect on other customers we will discuss with you alternative solutions for your hosting requirements.

Umm, yup. Try pushing your "unlimited" bandwidth without breaking a sweat on the server.

The bottom line is this: there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth / unlimited disk / unlimited emails. No matter what someone says. You think if you filled up a 200TB disk they would just add more? You think they'll provide 200TB disk for $9.95 a year? Doubt it. :-)

I'm not saying they're a bad host, and it appears that you're happy with them. But unlimited anything is pure BS, plain and simple.

lol

of course 'reality' is going to set a limit on anything.

This reminds me of the age old comic issue, "Nigh Invulnerablility".

Anyone who's read 'The Tick' comic book will know exactly what I'm talking about.

Basically it's like this:

Superman is invulnerable. or he was until they introduced this thing called 'Kryptonite'. So he has become 'nigh invulnerable'

The server operates along the same principle. Your account is 'unlimited'...

As long as you don't upload kryptonite...
