You edit the files through ftp... edit the files.

If you edit the files via ACP you will see the changes fine.
But if you later refresh templates or theme in ACP you will loose all the edits you made in the ACP.

On automod installs, automod even edits the files not the database cache.
No is NEVER an Option and NEVER is the only Option when it comes to Giving Up!™
