Not possible as the session for mchat isn't set unless on the custom page.

anyway... after having a poke around the code... would this be achieved if i just change $on_page to 'mchat', in functions_mchat (mchat_users function)...
or even in mchat.php setting $on_page to always be 'mchat'?
would this work / have any undesirable effects?

tried it. perhaps not, then.
it must be possible, Rich? i appreciate that it might not be a straightforward little tweak, however.
i'm thinking the other option is that i embed the custom page into some jquery widget on the desired forum... this hopefully getting all users browsing that forum counted in the chat figures, and the user able to expand / collapse the chat as desired.
