Own well configured VPS. Quality VPS hosting. This site is heavier on the server than core phpBB is.

Amazing. it's just a pleasure to browse the forum. Do you use memcache xcache etc as well? do you think they are useful? also what do you think about cloudflare?

No, we don't use any cache except the one included with phpBB. My experience is that all caching software only gives a new place for things to get messed up, without any advantage worth the effort to manage them.
