How many? or how many active/public boards? :-) I have - at any given point in time - a bunch of test boards running, many of which are private for client development projects. So those probably don't count.

My biggest board recently crossed the 250,000 post count mark, and we have (even after a recent spam-user prune) over 18K users. The board has been active for four years.

I have two other phpbb-related boards, one of which I started and one that I "inherited" when the former owner decided to get out of phpbb altogether. I'm still working through the details of how to combine the two boards.

I co-admin a board which uses the cash MOD and a bunch of stuff that I've written to create a stock market game using real stock quotes. That one is fun, but challenging. There is a spin-off of that board that isn't quite live yet, but will be soon.

I run a board for digital photography that is just getting started. It's mostly intended for members of a local photography club that I'm a member of, but it's open to anyone that finds it and wants to join.

I run a board for car enthusiasts that is pretty inactive, as it's a supplement for cars of a very specific color, so not a very broad audience.

I run a private board for the consulting company that I work for, it's a core of phpBB but it includes calendar and project management addons that I wrote.

I use phpbb as the core code for a job posting board that went live earlier this year, and it's still growing. There are quite a few features that I want to be able to include, but need to complete some other projects first.

I am in the process (seemingly never ending) of integrating phpbb completely into my photography site, so that folks can click on a picture and ask questions / discuss that specific picture. Or ask questions about a location. That board will also include a sales system that will allow folks to purchase photographs via the site as well. I expect to be finished sometime, oh, about 2014 or so. :P We'll see. That's one of my favorite projects but also the one that seemingly always last on my priority list, as I have to take care of paying customers before I do anything for myself.

In short, I really like phpbb as the "core" of a web site. If you design a site from the beginning with that in mind, you can avoid redeveloping a lot of code like user registration and so on.

This will get you very many friends over here

I've worked with vBulletin, and i must say, it's really a good software from the user point of view. I also like many parts of the ACP, but the configuration is just so hard to navigate. You never find what you're looking for. And tbh, there's just too many options! :P

Very nice, after a bit of googling your reasons for creating phpBB Garage finally make sense :)

Yeah. I created phpBB Garage for IMOC as we did not want to pay for IPB and the garage MOD for it. So I created it in phpBB. I got asked to release it and did so.
