Here non-phpBB topics can be discussed.

DDoS attack on the board

Postby newsbee_2 » 15 Mar 2012, 12:55

Hi guys, on March 12-13 a DDoS attack was carried out against my board, specifically aiming at /forum/index.php

The board is located on a dedicated server so the attack didn't affect other users' websites.

Is there something that can be done to mitigate such attacks? What are the dangers connected with them?
Of course, I've checked on the internet, but I want to know your opinion and learn of some cheap and dirty tricks to minimize the damage.

Many thanks in advance.

I think there is not much you can do..
Contact your hosts, And let them block the IP adress that was used for the attack..

Thousands of IPs were involved. From all over the world.

Yet, my question is: do you know of any easy ways to mitigate such attacks?

Will it help, for instance, to re-direct the page at which the attack is targeted to some non-existent site?

Is your site for russians only or is it international?

You can use mod_geoip to exclude specified countries.

You can also use Snort, very powerful against port scans and ddos attacks!

Many thanks, guys. Checking your suggestions.
The board is for a few countries, but people check it when traveling in other countries, so I don't know how to go about it.

For now, I've allowed access to the board only from specific countries (from where members are or which they visit for vacations/work). More or less. But because the server is located in the US, I have to allow access from there as well, and many malicious users use US proxy or Tor IPs.

Just for the record.

Survived another attack, but this time I have no suspects. In fact, several major Russian boards, including a couple discussing guns, have gone down because of such attacks and remain inaccessible for several days.

Mine was inaccessible only one day.

Consider this http://www.spambotsecurity.com/

I have it installed on my site & it has protected me very well.
