If you're using it in a straight comparison, you should be good. It is used in phpBB, however it is used after it is cleaned of possible injects. It's usually a good idea to clean any external data, just to be on the safe side.

Be very, very careful there. Messing with $_SERVER variables unescaped is very dangerous.

bonelifer, do you mean like the "User account activated" log? As in, have a user notes entry automatically added stating "User ban hammered"?

From what I recall, that is all custom code. I know we have some special code classes that generate the site navigation, however for a standard phpBB board (as what he have is certainly not standard, instead it is highly modified) it would require some custom code solutions.
