You cannot remove those two. Because they are passed by reference and have no default value (default value for referenced args isn't even possible in PHP<5), they have to be specified. Also if you're not using them.
var_dump is more or less like echo, but also gives you the type of the variable (and also works for arrays). It's just to see if it works.
